Photography on the Water I: Kayak Series

Black and White Photography on the Water I: Percy Priest Lake, TN

A series of 35mm black and white traditional photographs that feature natural places with a reservation for the sublime nature of our water environments. Even the bodies of water and plumes of clouds dwarf mankind and their attempts at monumentality, attempts at making a mark on the soil.

Sublime Waters: On the Island, 2020. Black and White Photograph digitally scanned.

A dam created by people formed a lake, but the might of the water retained in our rivers and lakes hold more potential energy than we hope to control indefinitely. The clouds that tower above us are reservoirs of water that could easily incapacitate the dam if severe enough; yet we still take our boats out on the water in ecstatic leisure.

Perhaps these photographs help acknowledge the might of this power and energy, a sense of the polar revitalizing and rectifying nature of water in immense masses. In a state where water is bountiful, we easily take for granted the luxuries we have. Water brings prosperity but is still an unpredictable force that should be recognized for its sublime nature.
