REFUGEE SALVAGE AND SALVATION

Human Society Series: Refugee Salvation and Salvage, 2021. Printed media collage, 7"x 8.25".

SALVATION-NATION

In a globalized world, it is more and more common to meet refugees, diplomats and immigrants from all nations and countries. Many societies, including the United States of America, are essentially composed of immigrants and their descendants. They are often the downtrodden, the vilified or ostracized, the poor and the desperate.

What happens when a society greets immigrants with open arms? Assimilation? A crossing and blending of cultures?

What happens when a society meets immigrants with xenophobia? Fear of competition? Segregation?

When we look past borders and nationalities, we can seen people as people and can realize a common goal of peace and prosperity. Whether it be race, religion or creed, when we hold biases toward people different to us, we rob ourselves of the opportunity to learn from one another and reject salvation on both sides.

Change forces us to adapt to new environments, and the social environment is no different. Technology allows us to be integrated beyond borders, and using the change that is involved in advancement in transportation demands it be taken advantage of for the good of people. People are not a commodity or numbers that move from place to place...people are forms of energy that move from place to place, potentials for infinite growth. The potential of their energy is reflected in how nurturing their environment is. Scientists, entrepreneurs and passionate artists don't come from war-torn communities, they come from communities that were given the change to prosper and overcome.

This collage is an homage to immigrants and the heart-felt people who risk their lives to help others find a better life. It is also a cold reminder that the reception and behavior of a society towards immigrants is just as important as the transfer and asylum. How we react to people of differing backgrounds is essential to creating an equal and prosperous society.
