Human Conditions Series: Feeding the Hunger

APPETITE AND SATIATION

Human Conditions Series

While there is physical hunger that is caused by an empty stomach, the human condition has given rise to many forms of hunger. Our appetite for more, cravings that are stemmed from innate instinct, are manipulated into alternate desires and illusory needs.

Human Conditions Series: Appetite, 2024. Printed and multimedia collage, 16"x 11".

In culture we often use symbols, like vampires or the insatiable cartoon bear for example, to represent the carnal hunger of the id or uncontrolled ego. Appetite for varied stimulus is often the culprit, the need for the next dopamine hit is what drives us. We are ritualistic beings that tend to create habits when we find something we like, and those habits can lead to a desire for more. Like with a drug, the body builds resistance to almost any stimulus, so that it takes more and more to satisfy the hunger.
