THE THRILL-SEEKER
Human Conditions Series
Human Conditions Series: Thrill-seeking, 2023. Printed and multimedia collage, 16"x 11".
The mundane and ordinary can make some go insane, and others to do danger-inducing tasks for the thrill of it. Free-climbing, Sky-diving, Bungie-jumping... Concert, Festival, Circus, Casino, and Stadium-goers... all want a little bit more. The spectacle of exciting events brings people into the present, and maybe distract them enough to not think about their temporal lives for a moment.
We are living to older and older age, and in the post YOLO age it still drives people to do wild things... and in time those thrill-seekers become the spectators, living by proxy of the films and thrills they watch and see.
ON THE SERIES
A series where each work focuses on a major theme related to the bizarre complexity that is the human condition. Each iteration is embodied by a collage of varied photographic and printed imagery, charts, writing and numbers. To unify the series which will be presented together, they relate to one another by sharing a common background.
Each work is also a study in composition and color. Techniques on revealing and obscuring images in a collage is tested, methods of cutting and folding, and practice in where to put each component to create harmony while leaving 'breathing room' for the eyes to rest with empty negative space. Each work also focuses on a color scheme found in the source materials that is notably different in each artwork of the series, one that compliments and does not distract from the main theme.
The theme is suggested by the title of each work, which came with a lot of consideration, but the theme exists beyond that single word and instead embraces a feeling that can only be residue of the human condition.
