Fungi Focus: Mushroom Prints

VAN DYKE BROWN PHOTOGRAPHY

Pleurotus ostreatus

Here are a few still-life photographs of locally sourced Oyster Mushrooms, hand-printed using the alternative photographic method of Van Dyke brown. Under luminous lighting the white-gilled fungi demonstrate their smooth and tender surfaces in a monochromatic format.

These test prints have unique borders from the hand-applied chemistry, of which provides idiosyncratic qualities that creates sui generis attributes to a digitally taken photograph. The uncertainty that comes with the application means there is no way to create the same border twice and gives each print an unrepeatable outcome.
