Sunrise over Nag's Head Beach, September 2019
Before Hurricane Dorian
As the eyes adjust to the dim twilight horizon, the first rays of the sun are reflections on the water. The warm Atlantic winds blow a low pressure as jellyfish dot and the crabs dart the beach. The waves follow a rhythm in time with gulls in the sky, pulling up in gusts of wind with the roll of the water, then falling in into crash and swoop.
The beach is sleepy and each coastline to the left and right seems barren and calm.
There are other people among the sand, but no one is talking. Revering nature through unspoken admiration was the tacit agreement between us. Everyone wanted one last day on the beach before the storm.
