E. M. Forster: On Humanism

"The four characteristics of humanism are curiosity, a free mind, belief in good taste, and belief in the human race."

E. M. Forster

Reflections on Humanism

1. Curiosity

Necessary for any who wander into new ideas, the plasticity of the mind allows for inspiration from the surroundings, and a drive to know more is what leads to those new ideas.

2. Free Mind

What does it mean to have a free mind, is it similar to a free will? Detached from others reality, a free mind is able to reflect on itself, its situation and surroundings. Without freedom to learn and process on one's own terms, the human potential is stifled because not all human beings can decide freely.

3.Belief in Good Taste

Not the best way to put it, but can be taken to mean a harmony of aesthetic. An acknowledgement of both shared and subjective tastes, one that is judged in the moment and not held with preconceived notions or prejudged preferences. Believing that somewhere in the swirling mess of reality is a balanced and pleasurable view of it.

4. Belief on Mankind

No work is done in complete isolation, and a positive belief on you and others' intentions is what leads to fruition and mutual success. No thing is made from a vacuum, and one must accept the lineage and succession of past human endeavors to build positively on the past with a good faith in what's next.
