Macro Mineral Study VI: SiO2 (Tiger's Eye)


SiO2- Tiger's Eye (Silicon Dioxide)

While composed of the same molecules of the Chrysoprase, it is interesting that location and surroundings effect the color and structure of the mineral. Both forms of quartz, this mineral called Tiger's Eye is a small sample of a very commonly found mineral, popular and collected for its Chatoyancy characteristic and silky lustre.

the fibers of the crystalline rock create a light shimmering effect, similar to the iridescence in the eye of a reptile or cat, which explains its common name.

Chatoyancy

Even as an unpolished stone, Tiger's Eye has a mesmerizing and shining quality. As the crystal plays with the light in the transparency-varying layers, it reminds one of the layers of soil in the crust of the earth, but at a microcosmic level.
