While the symbolism of the egg goes back far, through representation of life and death in ancient and medieval mysticism, to the associations of egg with rebirth and spring. Today eggs are displaced from their source, and lose all their metaphorical value for their simple value as a food commodity.
They are the ideal source of protein for many, are essential as a binder in baking, was the main ingredient in Renaissance and Medieval tempura paint and are come in their own natural packaged shell. Mundane and simple, yet the whole universe is reflected in the egg. So why does it go so unnoticed, discarded frivolously, and regarded as gross or unsanitary for some?
Taking up close and intimate photographs of the simple and essential parts of my life is a way I attempt to appreciate them in a more engaged way. I hope they come to remind others of the simple significance of the egg.
