Public Works: Castle Hill in Austin, TX

Found on a steep hill facing downtown Austin, this gap in a neighborhood has been a continuously evolving public artwork. The sandy skeleton of no longer existing homes has become a playground for muralist, graffiti artists, taggers, visitors and locals.

The smell of spray paint is fresh in the air as individuals take new course on the walls, covering old layers in pursuit of new ideas and forms. The bright sky illuminates iridescent, neon bright, and deep matte colors into a spectacle made by the public, unique and varying as the people who wander the ghost corridors and trodden trails to the top.

To witness an artwork from photos is one impressionable way of experiencing art, but being engulfed in the actively changing artwork itself is always an experience of its own value that is hard to share.
