Witness of Perception: Vandyke Collage

Starting with an older photograph I have taken and reprinted at 8"x10": Idiosyncrasy of Nature, 2013. I wanted to stencil new depths in a collage that used this image. I want it it vibrate with patterns integrated into the fabric of the landscape, so that the collage seems to have a pattern overlaying the material of the image, that of the trees.

The patterns in the collage compose the space like a screen over your eyes, similar to the way we see everything filtered through our senses and perception. At first glance the ultimate structures are seen, then as one studies the collage more details are noticed, and the details seem to compete, appear and fade behind other textures. Like the screen of perception, the screen of pattern has domain over the image, it is unavoidable and effectively defines what you see; but when you look past the screen you are able to see a composed truth behind as a tree suspends in the forest.
