Visualizing Spacetime: Vandyke Brown Collage, Nashville Parthenon

Updated: Sep 19, 2021

Visualization of Spacetime in Nashville's Parthenon, 2016. Vandyke Brown collage. 8.5 x 10.5".

My most recent Vandyke Brown collage is an exploration in visualizing the concept of space-time in a two dimensional space.

Curved forms of the Parthenon create space that is not easily determinable. While the columns suggest straight lines, the relations between all the steps and forms seem in-congruent. Splices and angles of paper seem to dissect different frames of time, like rays of light that rest between the columns. The diagonal lines seem to reveal both permanent and temporary moments of time, defined by a specific place in space. Perspective is the chief factor that limits what is revealed.

Wisps of smoke dance between layers, existing only in a specific frame of time. The material of the architecture and its imagery seems established and sturdy, but within a factor of time-space looses integrity. The shapes of the structure seem to bend and bow, perhaps similar to the way one would experience space when reaching near the speed of light, where multiple angles of the same object can be viewed at the same moment.
